چکیده

DNA-stabilized silver clusters are remarkable for the selection of fluorescence color by the sequence of the stabilizing DNA oligomer. Yet despite a growing number of applications that exploit this property, no large-scale studies have probed origins of cluster color or whether certain colors occur more frequently than others. Here we employ a set of 684 randomly chosen 10-base oligomers to address these questions. Rather than a flat distribution, we find that specific color bands dominate. Cluster size data indicate that these "magic colors" originate from the existence of magic numbers for DNA-stabilized silver clusters, which differ from those of spheroidal gold clusters stabilized by small-molecule ligands. Elongated cluster structures, enforced by multiple base ligands along the DNA, can account for both magic number sizes and color variation around peak wavelength populations.

Temporal stability of magic-number metal clusters: beyond the shell closing model.

The anomalous stability of magic-number metal clusters has been associated with closed geometric and electronic shells and the opening of HOMO-LUMO gaps. Despite this enhanced stability, magic-number clusters are known to decay and react in the condensed phase to form other products. Improving our understanding of their decay mechanisms and developing strategies to control or eliminate cluster ...

Magic numbers of atoms in surface-supported planar clusters.

Surface-supported planar clusters can sprout active research and create numerous applications in the realm of nanotechnology. Exploitation of these clusters will be more extended if their properties on a supported substrate are thoroughly apprehended, and if they can be fabricated in a controllable way. Here we report finding the magic numbers in two-dimensional Ag clusters grown on Pb quantum ...

Isolation and structural characterization of magic silver clusters protected by 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan.

Small silver clusters (average diameter of 1.2 nm) protected by 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan (BBSH) were converted to stable, monodisperse clusters (2.1 nm) by a ripening process with excess amount of BBSH. Multiple characterizations of the isolated magic clusters revealed an approximate chemical composition of Ag(∼280)(SBB)(∼120).

Fractional phase transition in medium size metal clusters and some remarks on magic numbers in gravitationally and weakly interacting clusters

Based on the Riemannand Caputo definition of the fractional derivative we use the fractional extensions of the standard rotation group SO(3) to construct a higher dimensional representation of a fractional rotation group with mixed derivative types. An analytic extended symmetric rotor model is derived, which correctly predicts the sequence of magic numbers in metal clusters. It is demonstrated...

Magic numbers for metallic clusters and the principle of maximum hardness.

It is shown that for relatively more stable metallic clusters (those with magic number of atoms) the chemical hardness (I-A) too is relatively larger. Thus the occurrence of magic numbers for metal clusters whose stability is determined by their electronic shell structure can be understood as a manifestation of the principle of maximum hardness. This may also represent a possible way of delinea...
